Advanced Book Exchange - ABE
ABE is the best large independent online book source. It offers some 70 million books from 13 thousand sellers, including Sam Weller’s. Unlike ABAA, anyone can sell on ABE so buyer discretion and caution is recommended. Unlike other large sites, such as Alibris, Amazon or Barnes & Noble, the buyer transacts her purchase directly with the person who possesses the book which makes getting accurate answers to your inquiries easier. ABE’s advanced search is very sophisticated and enables searching with more precise parameters than most other sites. It enables one to refine searches in many ways, including by location of sellers, which could save on postage and time of delivery.

Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America - ABAA
The ABAA is an association of our nation’s most experienced and knowledgeable antiquarian booksellers. It promotes ethical standards and professionalism in the rare book trade and sponsors two large annual antiquarian book fairs. ABAA members are sworn to a strict code of ethics. In an era when every Tom, Dick or Harry is a bookseller, it is easy to be disappointed by those who have little experience, especially when buying online. No other organization guarantees the knowledge, experience and ethics like the ABAA of which Tony Weller and Joan Nay of Sam Weller’s Rare Book Department are member and associate member respectively. The ABAA web site isn’t as large as ABE’s because only accredited sellers are permitted to list books there. But this is why the ABAA site can be used with confidence. When expertise is important, the ABAA’s web site is the place to start.

American Booksellers Association - ABA
The American Booksellers Association was founded in 1900. It is a non-profit organization devoted to meeting the needs of its core members, independent booksellers with physical locations. ABA aids booksellers through advocacy, education, research and dissemination of information, ABA supports free speech, literacy and programs that encourage reading. ABA is also responsible for the creation and sponsorship of the revolutionary Book Sense program. In the 1990s, ABA was instrumental in helping to level the playing filed between independents and corporate retailers by assisting numerous bookstores, including Sam Weller’s Books, to sue several large publishers and Barnes & Noble and Borders for anti-trust violations. In each suit, settlements were achieved which substantially altered wholesaler to retailer relations making them more fair to the interests of smaller retailers. More recently, ABA has taken a leading role in advocating for reader’s privacy rights which are compromised by the U.S. Patriot Act.

Book Sense
Book Sense is a national marketing and branding campaign created for independent storefront bookstore members of the ABA. Over 1200 bookstores are part of this cooperative effort to remind readers of the importance of a healthy independent bookselling community. Book Sense manages the popular Book Sense Picks list of books recommended by independent booksellers who really read the books. It also maintains the Book Sense Bestseller List, which is the truest measure of the public’s interest in books, in that it is untainted by the manipulations of interested parties and less susceptible to manipulation than other bestseller lists. Book Sense also manages a gift card program which enables book buyers to buy a gift card at any Book Sense store and redeem it at any other. Book Sense sells books online by routing sales to member stores near buyers via the Book Sense web site.

Buy Local First Utah - Local First
Local First is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public and local policy makers about the cultural and economic value of locally owned businesses and encouraging people to shop at local businesses. Local First was started by the Salt Lake Vest Pocket Business Coalition in 2004. To find local businesses, use this directory which lists hundreds of Utah owned businesses. Local businesses create the character and personality of a community. Money spent at local businesses is at least three times more likely to be spent locally, thereby increasing earnings of local professionals as well as other Utah owned businesses. Local businesses are more dedicated to the communities in which they do business because that is where their owners make their homes. Buy close by, preserve your community.

Salt Lake Vest Pocket Business Coalition - Vest Pocket
In 1999, the Vest Pocket Coalition was formed by a small group of Salt Lake business owners in order to pool thinking and resources to help locally owned businesses to survive and thrive. Vest Pocket is a very spirited organization with about 200 members who are dedicated to local economies and the uniqueness and character that only local businesses can provide. Vest Pocket strives to promote the values of community and stop the homogeneity of a retail landscape increasingly dominated by corporate chains. Vest Pocket is responsible for prompting Salt Lake County to make funds available to engage the University of Utah’s Eccles School of Business to perform a study to measure the economic effects of local versus non-local businesses in the Salt Lake area. This study is not yet completed. Vest Pocket is also responsible for the concept and formation of the Buy Local First Utah Program, which educates citizens and policy makers about the real benefits of locally owned businesses.
